Adirondykes is an annual queer pilgrimage based in Schroon Lake, NY, founded in 2023 by Danielle and Martha - because all great traditions have to start somewhere! Think Autostraddle Camp meets Fire Island meets DIY Wellness Retreat - with hot showers, WIFI, and AC. Take the kayaks out birding, hike to a swimming hole, work remotely by a beautiful lake, bounce around the pickleball court, or get a haircut under the stars. Enjoy group dinners with 25 friends - old, new and future - and board games for dessert. Come and get as close to nature as a New Yorker would reasonably want to be.
This is the walk from our cluster of cottages to the lake
We rent 5 cottages that are clustered together and share a common fire pit & picnic area.
Schroon Lake is about a 4 hour drive from NYC. We do our best to help coordinate carpools in the weeks leading up to the event. There is no cost for parking at Terra Alta.
There are also options to take a train, bus, or plane. If this is your plan, let us know in advance and we will find someone to pick you up / drop you off at the station or airport.
While everyone is responsible for their own breakfast, snacks, and lunch, we eat dinner together as a group. This year, we'll assign meal time slots in advance, and each group will be responsible for choosing, planning, and getting ingredients to cook their group meal. There is a Tops grocery store within a 5m drive of the cottages.
While housing costs aren't fully locked-in until we have the final count, it's safe to allot $300 per person for the week, plus food costs. We try our best to keep collective incidental costs low, but will use Splitwise throughout the week for grocery runs, gas, or optional small group-based excursions.
We love to expand our community and welcome new people. Let us know if you would like to invite a friend who wasn't invited directly.
While we generally welcome friendly dogs, we have some safety limitations - and have to charge an additional fee, since Terra Alta charges us. Reach out to discuss if you'd like to bring your buddy.
The cottage grounds offer the following items, free of charge. While we share those items with the rest of the Terra Alta community, the grounds are usually relatively empty while we're there and we haven't had trouble with access.
While we have dinners together and may plan one or two activities for the whole group, we encourage people to make the trip their own. People often split off in smaller groups that assemble on the fly - like early birds looking to hike or beer connoisseurs who head to Paradox Brewery. Many take space to float off alone on a kayak with a book or find a place to play guitar. And if you have a hobby or a game you'd like to share, we welcome you to bring it!
